The Faces of Cognac

At The Bordeaux Concierge, we love to share authentic experiences with our clients and one of our favorite places to do this is in the wonderful region of Cognac. This includes meeting the people that make Cognac what it is today. Through our new series, The Faces of Cognac, we bring these vibrant personalities to our audience at home and hope that one day we can introduce you in person.

What is your role at Maison Rémy Martin?

As part of the Hospitality team, my main role is to create special and tailor-made experiences for our clients. I am in contact with them beforehand to set up their program, I welcome them in Cognac and I am usually in touch with them after their time with us – sometimes still years later! I am also in charge of our boutique, where our clients can find all the classic Rémy Martin & Louis XIII cognacs, but also exclusive editions.

What has been your career path to date?

I started by studying law, which, although fascinating, I soon discovered was not for me. Between two years at law university, I applied to be a part of the Rémy Martin guiding team as a summer job. After two months, I decided I never wanted to leave! Luckily, I was able to stay and be part of an apprenticeship program to continue studying. In the last six years, I have been lucky to experience most of the positions in our department, going from guiding our clients to handling reservations, to inventorying pieces of art at heritage, to dealing with accounts and finance and back to client relations since June 2017. I truly enjoy the versatility of the job and connecting with my clients and colleagues from many other departments.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

Above every other aspect of my position, what I enjoy most is getting to meet incredibly interesting people from different countries, different cultures and sharing the story of our House with them. At Rémy Martin we consider hospitality to be part of our DNA and making people feel at home in the way we host them is very important to us. I love hearing about the link that people have with Rémy Martin and we feel honored when clients choose our House to celebrate special events in their life – I have witnessed so many birthdays, anniversaries and pilgrimage trips I could write a book!

In your view, what makes Rémy Martin special?

One thing that defines Rémy Martin is its attachment to family and heritage and that is something you feel when you walk around our estates. This conveys emotion without even having to speak and still feels amazing six years after having step foot at Rémy Martin for the first time.

The essence of the history of Rémy Martin is one of entrepreneurship, vision and passion for people and quality products. These values have been handed down from generation to generation for the past nearly three centuries and is still very much genuinely part of our day-to-day life.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

Despite what my job description might imply, I am a true introvert ! Actually, to prove to myself that being an introvert isn’t an obstacle in life, a few years ago I booked a three-week solo trip to Cuba and backpacked all around the west part of the island, mixed with the locals and discovered a new culture and lifestyle. It is to this day one of my very favorite trips.

What profession other than your own would you love to attempt?

I grew up wanting to be a teacher, I love learning and sharing knowledge (my favorite game as a teenager was the “name all the countries in the world” game!). I would love to volunteer as a teacher one day in a developing country and do my part for world education. Another thing I love is fashion and styling my friends and family and finding the right match to highlight their traits and personalities is one of my hobbies.

What recommendations do you have for visitors to Cognac?

Drive (or cycle if you are brave) up and down the hills of the Grande Champagne through the vines, it is especially beautiful around harvesting season. Another must is to sip a cocktail (in moderation) while watching the sun go down at one of the many viewing points (called “table d’orientation”) the area has to offer.

Founded in 1724 and based in the city of Cognac, Rémy Martin is one of the biggest producers of cognac in the region. All Rémy Martin cognacs have the Cognac Fine Champagne appellation, meaning that they come exclusively from a blend of eaux-de-vie from Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, with at least 50% coming from Grande Champagne. Rémy Martin ’s current Cellar Master, Baptiste Loiseau, assumed the position in 2014 at the age of 34. He follows in the footsteps of André Renaud, André Giraud, Georges Clot, and Pierrette Trichet.
